Stay for 30 minutes
You must remain in the office for 30 minutes after every injection — no exceptions, even if you have had shots for years.
Nearly all serious reactions begin within that window. Staying means trained staff and emergency medication are steps away if one does. Please don't run an errand and come back, and let us know before you leave.
Before you arrive

Bring your epinephrine auto-injector
If an EpiPen or Auvi-Q has been prescribed for you, bring it to every appointment and check that it hasn't expired.

Take your pre-medication
If your provider recommended an antihistamine before shots, take it before you come in rather than after you arrive.

Skip hard exercise right before and after
Exercise increases blood flow and can make a reaction more likely. Give it a couple of hours on either side of your injection.

Tell us if you're unwell
A cold, a flare of asthma or allergy symptoms, a new medication, or a possible pregnancy can all change whether today's dose is safe. Say something even if it seems minor.
Pre-injection check
Answer a few questions before your shot so staff can review anything that might have changed since last time. It takes about a minute.
If you have a reaction
Expected
Redness, mild swelling, or itching at the injection site that settles within a day. Mention it at your next visit so we can track the pattern.
Call the office
Swelling larger than a golf ball, site reactions lasting past the next day, hives, or a flare of allergy or asthma symptoms in the hours afterward.
Call 911
Trouble breathing, throat tightness, widespread hives, dizziness or fainting, or vomiting. Use your epinephrine auto-injector first if you have one, then call.
If you miss an appointment
Call us rather than simply coming in at your next convenient time. Depending on how long it has been since your last injection, your dose may need to be reduced and built back up.
This is a safety step, not a formality — resuming at a dose your body is no longer used to is one of the more common causes of a reaction. There is no penalty for a gap, and we would much rather adjust the dose than have you skip treatment entirely.
